For preserving the historic structure, Andrea and Olaf Ernst received the promotional award bestowed by the Cultural Foundation of the Lower Franconia region. They transformed the Old Brewery in Untersteinbach into a modern residential and office building whose energy-efficiency meets all contemporary requirements. The historic flair of the heritage-protected curtain wall lends the building its special charm. This is supported by the use of the heroal W 72 and heroal W 72 i window systems as well as the heroal D 72 door system.
The historic building, which is now a highlight of the Untersteinbach town centre, situated in the Lower Franconian district of Haßberge, had previously lain dormant for decades. Working on behalf of the brewery’s owner Georg Zeck, in 1928 the architect Karl Rüttinger took over the design and construction of the brewery’s premises. But after its sale in 1950, the distinctive building with arched windows increasingly fell into disrepair until accountant and current owner Olaf Ernst became fascinated by the building: as a member of the municipal council for the area, he was very passionate about the preservation of the historic structure. Family ties – Olaf Ernst is the great-grandson of the architect who designed the building – were an additional motivating factor. His redevelopment concept, which provided for the heritage-protected brewery to be converted to an accountant’s office and three holiday apartments, convinced the council and the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior of his plans.
